Laurence Howe was returning from an experiment at Grenoble
in 1990 when he became entangled with the traffic leaving Paris
on a holiday Saturday. He was struck by the apparent wave-like
motion of the traffic queues and decided to write a computer
model to explore the phenomenon. By this time he had successfully
written a number of complex computer models, including one of
molecular flow in a porous medium and one of molecular
binary phase separation. His interest was kindled by the knowledge
that understanding the interaction between drivers and vehicles
at the level of individual vehicles could have many implications,
including the exploration of safety systems and automatic
vehicle control.
