VEDENS in Action

Using the model it is possible to carefully control parameters such as driver and vehicle characteristics. It is also possible to investigate the effect of various road configurations. Any experiment involving real drivers and vehicles would be extremely expensive and time consuming. It would be impossible to control driver reactions in a precise manner. The risk of accidents could, in some circumstances, be much higher than for normal driving. Furthermore, the conditions which could be investigated by the model may well be illegal. It would also be extremely inconvenient and politically insensitive to close many tens of miles of motorway to carry out carefully controlled experiments. In addition, by using the model it is possible to investigate road configurations which do not exist at present.
