The Mechanics of VEDENS

Once a vehicle has entered the model, either at the beginning of the highway or via an on-ramp (entrance slip road), its speed and position are governed by the normal laws of mechanics. Maximum available acceleration is determined by the speed of the vehicle, its horse power rating and a notional “resistance” factor. The resistance factor depends on the specified maximum speed and horse power rating for the vehicle type, while maximum braking is specified directly by the input data. Actual acceleration and braking depend on the driver’s behaviour. Driver decisions are modelled by a driver algorithm, a set of rules for determining whether to slow down, change lanes, overtake, etc. Before the approach to an off-ramp (exit slip road), some vehicles are selected to leave via the exit.
