Preliminary VEDENS Results
Preliminary calculations which have been made so far, suggest that there
could be unanticipated problems associated with increasing the number of lanes.
If efficiency is regarded as the number of vehicles per hour per lane, the efficiency
of a highway appears to decreases significantly when the number of lanes is increased
to more than four. Increasing the number of lanes can be beneficial where vehicles
are joining the highway, but increasing the number of lanes to more than three
has less effect on the maximum capacity when more than 20% of the vehicles approaching
a given exit desire to leave via that exit.
